Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding may feel like a scary, unfamiliar land for guys. It's not something your body can do, but there are lots of ways you can help make breastfeeding easier for your partner and new baby. In fact, as the father of the baby and partner to the mother, your support is the single most important factor in breastfeeding success!
There are a lot of benefits to breastfeeding. Breast milk contains the perfect blend of nutrients to keep your baby health – and it's free!
Here is some advice on how to support your partner in breastfeeding:
- Remember that breastfeeding can be very hard work and it takes time and practice to learn. It's important to be her cheerleader during this time and offer encouragement and appreciation.
- Help her relax by taking on chores she would normally do. When your partner is relaxed, her milk will flow better and it may be easier to feed the baby. Rub her shoulders; offer her some water or a snack.
- Don't be afraid to reach out and ask for advice from friends, family, or even a breastfeeding counselor from the doctor's office. They have heard it all and may have recommendations that you and your partner have not tried before.
If your partner decides to pump her breast milk, you can greatly help out by labeling, cleaning, and making sure all the bottles are at a safe temperature. This can also give your partner a rest since you can feed the baby at night while she rests.
